What is alignment?
Alignment is the process of lining up the club face square
(perpendicular) to the target line, with your feet and shoulders
lined up slightly left of the target on a line parallel to the target
line. Many instructors use a railroad track analogy, where one rail
represents the target line (club alignment) and the other rail for
feet and body alignment.
Why is alignment so important?
|
The following picture clearly illustrates the impact of faulty
alignment.

Even if you misalign the club face only a couple of degrees (as in the illustration), the result can be missed fairways, greens and putts. Proper club face and body alignment isn't easy! Proper alignment in golf is especially difficult because you do not face your target as in most other sports. In golf, you stand sideways to the target, making it harder to visualize the target line and properly align your body and club face. |
| Can you tell whether the golfer pictured at right has squared the club face to the target line ? | ![]() |
| He hasn't, the club face is open 2 degrees. | ![]() |
| The club face isn't off by much,
but we saw above how just 2 degrees will significantly affect the
direction of the ball flight. On the course it's even harder because
you don't have the direction arrows and grass obscures the club face
from view. How to get a grip on your alignment: You can dramatically improve the consistency and accuracy of your alignment by using the AccuSpirit training aid in conjunction with a solid pre-shot routine. To find out how, please go to the AccuSpirit page. |
